Working with AI – Exploring Creativity with GPT

This ongoing project delves into the intersection of art, technology, and collaboration, as I explore how artificial intelligence can act as a creative partner. Using GPT, I’ve been experimenting with ways AI can inspire, inform, and shape artistic practice, from generating ideas and refining concepts to assisting in storytelling and project development.

What is GPT?

GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an advanced AI model designed to process and generate human-like text. It uses natural language understanding and machine learning to create responses based on the information it’s given. Think of it as a conversational partner that can assist with brainstorming, writing, and even creative problem-solving. In this project, GPT isn’t just a tool—it’s a collaborator, working alongside me in the creative process.

The Concept

Can AI be a collaborator in the artistic process? This project seeks to answer that question by engaging GPT as a co-creator. Rather than replacing the artist, AI becomes a partner—enhancing imagination, providing unexpected perspectives, and even challenging preconceptions about creativity. The result is a dialogue between human intuition and machine intelligence.

A Knowledge Base Built on My Work

To make this collaboration meaningful, I’ve trained GPT on a curated knowledge base crafted from my own writings and reflections. This includes:

• Interviews I’ve given about my practice and projects.

• Papers and presentations I’ve delivered at conferences.

• Notes and reflections from my creative process.

By drawing from this personalised foundation, GPT’s responses are rooted in my voice and artistic philosophy, making the collaboration feel authentic and uniquely tailored to my work.

AI in Practice: The AI Show

This ongoing exploration of AI as a creative collaborator has led to The AI Show: AI Mind vs Human Body—a live exhibition at Meanwhile Gallery (10–18 March 2025). In this project, AI takes control, generating daily painting instructions that I, as The Body, execute. It’s a direct challenge to ideas of authorship, memory, and artistic control, testing whether AI can truly lead the creative process or if human instinct will always intervene.

A Work in Progress

As this project evolves, I am exploring ways to use GPT in:

• Developing new narratives and concepts for art and animation.

• Experimenting with language and dialogue to complement visual works.

• Assisting with written materials for exhibitions, storytelling, and presentations.

• Challenging creative norms by incorporating machine-generated ideas into human-led projects.

Reflection

AI is rapidly reshaping the world around us, and this project is an opportunity to examine what that means for creativity. By working with GPT—a system trained on my personal body of work—I aim to uncover new ways to imagine, interpret, and communicate ideas. The AI Show is the latest step in this journey, a live experiment in which AI’s role in artistic authorship is put to the test. It’s a glimpse into a future where art and technology work hand-in-hand to expand the boundaries of what’s possible.
