Explore the Art of Mark Antony Smith
Welcome! This site is your gateway to exploring my creative journey through exhibitions, animation, painting, and collaborative projects that explore memory, narrative, and the body.
My work often asks how stories are formed, erased, or altered over time—whether through personal memory, shared history, or imagined futures. I’m drawn to the spaces we inhabit, the objects we surround ourselves with, and the playful, sometimes uneasy ways these shape our sense of self.
Right now, Human Robot is live in central Pōneke—a two-week performance-painting experiment running from 15–28 September 2025. Each day, I follow real-time instructions from a GPT-trained AI to create large-scale paintings in a glass-fronted studio. The public can watch the process unfold as the space transforms into a living studio and digital stage. The work explores labour, automation, authorship, and the tension between control and intuition.
The project began with a successful PledgeMe campaign—thank you to everyone who fed the robot! You can follow the progress and watch timelapses from the show here.
Earlier this year, I presented The AI Show at Meanwhile Gallery—a nine-day experiment in AI-led authorship and human resistance. You’ll also find projects like Black Dog: Failure, Invisible Prague, and The Lost Futures Exchange—works that shift between humour, melancholy, and reflection, always circling back to how we build and carry stories.
Explore the Paintings Gallery for selected works, including pieces from Echoes of Tomorrow at Space Studio Gallery. Some works are available for purchase—please get in touch through the contact page if you’re interested.
